Our team is committed to bridging the socioeconomic gap and creating meaningful connections with marginalized communities. Story

How BUILD came to Life

So, the story of BUILD? Well, it all started in 2020 with a casual conversation between Kofi and his close friend, Jeffrey. But before we dive into that, let’s rewind a bit. There was no name for the organization, no brand, just two guys with big ideas and a lot of passion.

Kofi, who had worked with several international NGOs, wanted to create a platform where any innovation or idea could take root and thrive across Africa—no matter who you are or where you come from. Then there was Jeffrey, the business-minded architect. Both Kofi and Jeffrey had friends in the diaspora, and one day they found themselves chatting about how fun (yes, fun) it would be to use the skills of people from the diaspora, or those with more opportunities, to empower the marginalized in our communities. It wasn’t just about helping the less advantaged; they wanted it to be a two-way street, where everyone had something valuable to offer. At first, their thoughts were focused on Ghana, their homeland.

The conversation grew, pulling in more people like Jasmine, and that’s when things really started to click. We started imagining a platform where anyone—yes, even people who’ve never set foot in the nonprofit world—could get involved. The idea wasn’t about money; it was about how we could use our collective experiences, skills, and exposure to make a difference in Ghana and Africa at large.

Naturally, we shared this idea with friends and family, and they were all in! Soon enough, we had a WhatsApp group full of eager minds tossing around ideas. But still, no name.

Transparency, Innovation, Commitment, Leadership and No discrimination—these were our core values. We opened up the name game to the group, and we got some wild suggestions. But one idea from Jasmine stood out: BUILD. It was perfect. BUILD meant Bringing Up Individual Development, and at the same time, it symbolized how we’re literally building potentials.

At that point, we became a coalition under SED Consult (Sustainable, Empowerment, and Development Consult) in Ghana, using it as our administrative base. We wanted BUILD to be something that everyone could own, so we didn’t rush to register it.

Our first activity was in 2021 at James Town, Accra, where we connected with street children and donated food. That experience solidified everything for us. We knew BUILD was bigger than we had initially imagined, and it was time to let it stand on its own.

That’s when we officially registered BUILD in 2023. Because this is more than just an idea—it’s a movement, a platform, a community. And we’re just getting started!
